In the spirit of Socrates’ devotion to inquiry, the Agora Philosophical Forum seeks to explore philosophical concepts.In weekly meetings, the forum fosters an environment of friendly interaction and discussion as well as critical analysis and argumentation, to constructively debate past and current events. While dedicated to the ideals of democracy and nonviolence, Agora is independent and impartial to any political or religious parties or individuals. Above all, it aims to cultivate and extend dialogical exchange within the Iranian community, to promote critical thinking and awareness.
The name of "Agora" was used in ancient Greek cities, for an open space serving as an assembly area and backdrop for commercial, civic, social, and religious activities. Prof. Ramin Jahanbegloo chose the name when he initiated this forum since 1999 in University of Toronto.
The main objectives of “Agora Philosophical Forum” are:
1. To introduce general philosophical themes and concepts and to promote and analyze Iranian culture, history, politics mainly through weekly Agora Philosophical Forums by Prof. Ramin Jahanbegloo.
2. To attract Iranian interest towards critical thinking while being independent and impartial to any political or religious parties or individuals.
3. To enhance and develop nonviolent and constructive relationship through analytical thinking and critical argumentation in a friendly environment.
